Teeth Whitening

When your teeth become discolored, it can make them appear unclean, as well as age you beyond your years. Here at Glennville Family Dentistry, we offer teeth whitening services that will have your smile looking bright and white once more. These services can be rendered in office or you can handle them yourself in the privacy of your own home.

Here at Glennville Family Dentistry, teeth whitening is one of the most affordable forms of cosmetic dentistry we offer. Despite its ease and affordability, it makes a radical difference in your appearance, whitening your teeth by many shades in a single office visit or over several weeks if whitening at home. This is why it is the most common cosmetic dentistry treatment both in our office and nationwide.

Discoloration of the teeth is a natural part of aging; no matter what you do, your teeth are going to stain over the years. However, the discoloration process can be sped up or worsened with certain habits. Some things that can worsen or speed up discoloration of the teeth include:

  • Coffee or tea
  • Red wine
  • Dark colored fruit juices and sodas
  • Cigarettes or smokeless tobacco

Many people who have discoloration of the teeth try non-professional methods such as whitening toothpastes and strips. However, these are unable to target set-in stains, only removing those on the surface that are still fairly fresh. While this does make a difference, it is small and does not last. In fact, the results are the same as what you see after your twice a year cleaning at the dentist.

Because most of the stains you see are not on the surface of the tooth, but inside the tooth, the only way to make a true and lasting difference is to target those set-in stains.

When it comes to profession teeth whitening, you have two choice: have the whitening completed at our office or do it at home with a professional kit. In both cases, you need to see us first so we can determine what you need, and for at-home whitening, we will create the trays that fit your teeth and prescribe the whitening solution. In both cases, the same whitening agent is used: concentrated hydrogen peroxide gel. This solution is used because its oxidation process is able to penetrate set-in stains and whiten the teeth.
In-office teeth whitening is an ideal solution for those who need a big difference in a hurry or who just do not want to bother with daily whitening at home. With this type of teeth whitening, you come in for an hour-long visit and then leave with a smile that is many shades whiter. The entire process is simple and you can still do things like browse the internet and answer emails as it is done.

This form of whitening uses the same gel as at-home whitening. However, the use of a laser lamp speeds up the oxidation process, which means your teeth whiten instantly. The lamp is intense, so we protect the lips and gums from being irritated by it or the activated gel. By the end of a single session, your teeth can be 8 shades lighter. In some cases, you may need more than one session to achieve the desired results, but in our experience, most patients are happy after just one.

At-home teeth whitening treatments are best for those who do not need an immediate change, want to be subtle in their transformation, or who just prefer to handle things themselves. For this type of whitening, we create trays that fit perfectly to your teeth. Once the trays are ready, we provide you with them and the professional-strength whitening gel. Each day, you clean your teeth and then wear the trays with the gel in them for the prescribed amount of time. The entire treatment lasts 2-3 weeks and can be repeated whenever it is needed, as long as you are working with a dentist.
